Real Worlds - Nightstalker Key Illustration Process

Nightstalker Sketch

I started off by using one of the thumbnails and reducing the opacity. I then started to sketch the specifics and fix the anatomy. I wanted to show off the spoon tail but with how the thumbnail was positioned, showing it was really awkward and it looked like the tail was broken. I decided to scrap this composition in favour of one that showed the Nightstalker's entire body.

I decided that I was going to pose the Nightstalker first and create the background around it. I started off by sketching the basics of the pose and reducing the opacity. I then did another rough sketch to put everything into place.

I then sketched in a rough background surrounding the Nightstalker. I wasn't sure where I wanted the main light source to be so I asked Sam for feedback. Sam suggested I didn't make the forest pitch black but instead have a moon somewhere above creating light rays over the forest. He also suggested that to make the Nightstalker 'pop', I could have an alternative light source (such as a flashlight) focused on the Nightstalker.

Value Paint

Here is a rough value paint I did to block out the different light sources.

Cleaning Up

I then cleaned up the sketch of the Nightstalker and added colour. I used a clipping layer and set it to multiply to make the Nightstalker look like it was in shadow. Then I added in the main light source, the flashlight.

I then used some custom brushes to add texture to the wings and inside of the tail.

I added a new layer and set it to multiply and added some tone based on where I think the shadows would fall. This is mainly under the head and spikes.

I then created another layer and set it to multiply so it looks like the Nightstalker is in shadow. I then added in the light from the flashlight using a vivid light layer.

Background

I used the Denman Ross value scale to block out the values in greyscale. I tried to do a fairly simple background as I'm not that comfortable with environments. This is a skill I want to build up on.

I then used the select tool and put each different value on a separate layer. I also cleaned up the values so they aren't just scribbles.

I then used custom brushes to add the grass and leaves.

I created a new layer and lowered the opacity to show the moonlight coming through the canopy. I used the multiply and screen layer effect to try and create a simple water texture.

I then added a blue gradient map to give it some colour whilst also still keeping it dull and 'dead' looking.

Finished Piece

Reflection

Overall, I'd say this piece is better than my previous attempts at key illustrations. I plan to build up my environment drawing skills so I can complete these illustrations quicker and to a standard that I am pleased with. For future illustrations, I plan to research more into different artist's approaches and methods when it comes to painting (especially in regards to environments).
