2D Toolkit - Hands (01/11/24)

In this lesson, we recapped on how to draw hands.

We started talking about the dorsal side

  • 6 lines make up the wrist and basic mass of the hand
  • Place mass for the thumb on the right
  • Thumb should be in line with the rest of the fingers
  • Split the fingers into 3 sections
After this we focussed on the palmar side
  • 6 lines
  • Place mass of thumb on the left
  • Fingers look shorted on the palm side due to webbing

Here is a basic diagram of the dorsal and palmar side of the hands

Hand Practice

Our first task, was to draw the hands of a conductor that was displayed in the PowerPoint.

I found the hand on the left a lot easier than the hand on the right. What I struggled with most was trying to do the perspective on the edge of the fingers. To help me with this, I drew some construction lines so the fingers would be in line with each other. Then I focussed on placing the 3 different sections of the fingers

After this, we were tasked to find our own references and to draw the hand doing different actions.

Hand Holding A Gun

I first found the basic 6 lines that made up the hand on the photo and then drew these lines on my attempt. I also drew the basic shapes of the gun to help me place the fingers in the right place.

Hand Holding A Gun 2

I found another reference of a hand holding a gun but this time I tried a different angle to challenge myself. I also once again drew the basic shape of the gun to help me position the fingers.

Hands Tying A Tie

I found this one particularly difficult. I struggled to envision what the fingers looked like on the hand on the left side. The fingers look to blocky and aren't bent in the way they are in the reference. The hand on the right has a similar issue where the fingers should be longer and bend more. In the future, I will practice more hands performing a similar action.

Spider Hands

For this task, we were challenged to make a pose with our own hand and draw it whilst we keep our hand in that position. This is the pink hand in the bottom left corner. After that, we were challenged to draw this from the other perspective. This is the blue hand in the top right corner.

I tried to do a pose I don't normally draw which I found quite challenging. I really struggled with the perspective especially when it came to the fingers. To help me with this I'll try practice drawing more hands in perspective. The second part of the task I found extremely difficult. I couldn't figure out how to draw it from the other side as I couldn't really see it. I decided to take a photo so I could use it s a reference to draw the blue hand.

Independent Learning

We were then tasked to draw 50 hands over the course of this project. This included the hands I drew today leading me to have 8 hands towards my goal so far.
