2D Toolkit - Clothes (22/11/24)
Gesture Drawings
To warm up, Sam started us off by drawing some gestures with a time limit that I've noted down next to each sketch. He gave us some advice to stop caring about how good our sketches look or we'll be too scared to finish them which is something I am guilty of.
Clothing Folds
Then we moved on to studying the different types of clothing folds with some discussion on how the textiles of the clothes affect this. Leather is a tight fabric whilst wool is thick.
Common types of clothing/ textiles:
- Cotton
- Linen
- Wool
- Leather
- Synthetics - various
Diaper Fold
Drop Fold
Pipe Fold
Half Lock
Spiral
Zig Zag
Stretching and action poses
After we drew all types of clothing folds, we were task with applying our knowledge to the action poses Sam gave us. We were given a time limit to draw the figure focussing on the clothing folds.
We continued to draw the clothing folds in references but this time we were task to draw some without lifting the pencil. We were also tasked on some to do it without looking at our drawing.
Reflection
The advice Sam gave us at the beginning in regards to the sketches is something I plan on thinking about in future pieces. I have a bad habit of getting too attached to the sketch where I don't finish a lot of my pieces (especially when it comes to personal art). I am aware that I'm not going to build up the skills I require if I don't let myself get to that stage.
I enjoyed drawing the clothing folds and learning about them. I plan to use this knowledge in my industry practice project where I'll likely be using drop and pipe folds to design the cloak of my character. I really enjoy drawing people and in order to accurately draw them, clothing folds is a skill I need to develop. The challenges Sam gave us where a little annoying. It was a little fun at first but I quickly discovered how difficult it made drawing the folds. These challenges made my sketches look a quite strange but it helped me adopt a more sketchier and less careful approach as I knew that it wouldn't be perfect.
