2D Toolkit - The Team (27/09/24)
In this lesson, we recapped on what makes an effective character design. We discussed that it's important to understand the setting, design an interesting costume, use shape and colour theory, composition and depth. We were then put in groups and we were challenged to create a team that consisted of the four main roles; the leader, the brains, the brawn and the wild card.
In this challenge, me and my team allocated the roles and then decided on a theme. We decided we wanted to go with a space theme focussing more on a simple and cartoony style. We talked about shows that best represented this theme and settled on a world similar to steven universe's style.
The role I chose was the nerd. For this, I mainly referenced peridot and typical nerd stereotypes. I knew I wanted to give my character glasses or a visor. I settled on a rounder shaped visor to portray that my character was friendly and safe to be around. I tried to use round shapes throughout the design for the same reason. I also wanted her to be a character that's more book smart and I tried to show this by drawing her in a compact and stiff pose to show she isn't in her element (assuming she's out on a spaceship). Most nerd character I've noticed have short hair or hair tied back. I couldn't decide which one I wanted to focus more on so I gave her somewhat short hair that also tied back slightly. Her space suit has patterns on relating to a circuit board to try show her interest in technology.
